Virgin Voyages -10 Tips Prior To Sailing
My husband, Mr. Travel, and I have sailed with Virgin several times. Here are some essential tips prior to sailing Virgin.
1. Download the Virgin Voyage App
The app is everything. You will need to download this prior to sailing. I recommend downloading it immediately after making your reservation. The app gives your daily itinerary, a running tab of anything you have spent (including where you stand with your bar tab), restaurant info and reservations, ship activities ( which can change daily), shore excursions, locations to restaurants, clubs, etc.
Shows
You cannot book a show until you are onboard and book through the Virgin app. Make this your priority; the shows fill quickly. The app has some tech issues, so if you have a problem, go directly to Sailor Services and get assistance.
I have had issues with the app every time I sailed, but the problems usually resolve once the boat sails.
2. Screenshot your reservation and cabin number
If the app fails, you will have everything you need to fix your problem. On my last cruise, the app froze four days before sailing. I called Sailor Services, and they were able to fix my app quickly because I had a screenshot with my info.
3. Wifi
It is free, but it is SLOW. If you only need to check your email, you will be fine. Otherwise, upgrade the wifi plan (about $10 per day) and do it the first day of sailing to get a discount. The upgraded wifi works well (for a boat, that is).
4. Food
Unlike other cruise lines, all 20+ restaurants are included at no additional cost. I recommend booking reservations at your restaurants prior to sailing so that you won't have any wait. You can update your reservations via the Virgin app.
There are no buffets. If you want a quick eat, Virgin offers The Galley. At The Galley, you can grab your food, which is made to order, and take it to the pool or your cabin, or find a seat and enjoy the stunning ocean views. There are over ten different international eats offering everything from breakfast, light bites, and tasty burgers. The Galley does not require a reservation. View more about restaurants here.
5. Drink
Bar Tab
There is no "drink package" on Virgin, but you can pay $300 for a bar tab ahead of your sailing, and Virgin kicks in an additional $100 towards your tab. It would help if you did this prior to sailing to get the perk. Also, you can share the bar tab, so everyone doesn't have to have individual bar tabs. Your bar tab can be applied to specialty coffee and pressed juices.
If you choose to sail without a bar tab, no worries - the drinks are priced reasonably, and tips are already included in the price. For more info on drink prices, visit my short blog on Virgin's inclusive pricing.
6. Bring a Thermos
Virgin is committed to sustainability, so there are no plastic water bottles. There is plenty of water and refill stations all over the boat. Carafes are filled daily in your cabin. Bring a thermos; it comes in handy.
7. Join the Party
Get Red
Scarlet Night. Don't miss this; it is fantastic. Take a nap; it begins around 11:00. Wear RED. Start looking now for something to wear. Anything goes. This is an outdoor event with a fabulous song and dance production. Get ready to join in poolside and dance the night away.
8. Pack Your PJs
Check your Virgin App for evening events. There is a party every night. And, yes, people wear PJs to the pajama party- but it is not a must; you can still enjoy the party if you forget your PJs.
9. Smoking
I found two areas for smoking. One indoor smoking lounge is just off the casino and on Deck 16 which is outside. You cannot smoke or vape in your room or on your balcony. You are strictly prohibited.
10. Gratuities
Gratuities/Tips are already included in the pricing. This includes spa services, drinks at the bar, housekeeping, salon services, and restaurants. We hope these tips help! This is a great cruise experience with options to keep you relaxed during the daytime and amped up for a fun-filled party atmosphere during the evening. The choice is yours, and it is all good.
